Sistema Universitario Ana G. Mendez

Introduction

Sistema Universitario Ana G. Mendez is a private nonprofit institution offering both undergraduate and graduate level coursework. This institution was founded by Ana G. Mendez and was the first institution of higher education in Puerto Rico. There are several universities that are a part of this institution including: the Universidad del Este, the Universidad del Turabo, the Universidad Metropolitana, the Metro Orlando Campus, and the South Florida Campus.

Academics

The Higher Education Council of Puerto Rico licenses Sistema Universitario Ana G. Mendez and it is responsible for all efforts associated with higher education in Puerto Rico. The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools also accredits SUAGM, allowing this institution to award degrees to its students. Several of the programs offered at UNE have their own accreditations and these include: Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA), American Culinary Federation (CF), and Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). There are several programs at UMET, which have their own accreditations and these include: the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commissio (NLNAC), the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), and the Commission for Independent Education.

Universidad del Turabo:

Universidad del Turabo has a suburban campus located 15 miles southeast of San Juan on 140 acres. It also has several university centers located in Cayey, Yabucoa, Isabela, Naguabo, Ponce, and Orlando (Florida). The different programs offered at the Universidad del Turabo include: Science and Technology, Engineering, Education, Health Sciences, Human and Social Sciences, and Business Administration.

Universidad del Este:

Universidad del Este has its main campus located in the northeast region of Puerto Rico in Carolina. It also offers various University Centers extending its education opportunities to students in Barceloneta, Utuado, Cabo Rojo, Yauco, and Santa Isabel. The schools offered at the UNE include: Business Administration, School of Education, Science & Technology, Health Sciences, Social & Human Sciences, Technical Studies, Professional Studies: AHORA Program and Continuous Education, and International School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts.

There are also various internship opportunities at this university allowing students to gain hands on experience along with their education. Students who receive an internship may also find themselves being granted employment opportunities as well as graduate study opportunities. In order to qualify for an internship students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours.

Universidad Metropolitana:

Universidad Metropolitana has various University Centers located in Bayamon, Jayuya, and Aguadilla. The programs and schools offered at the UMET include: AHORA program; School of environmental affairs; Business administration; Education; Science and technology; Health sciences; School of social sciences, humanities and communications; School of technical studies; and School of continuing education.

Admissions

Students interested in enrolling as an incoming freshman must submit their official high school transcripts, official CEEB or SAT scores, a small nonrefundable application fee, immunization test results, and a copy of their Social Security card. If students are applying to Universidad del Este and are over the age of 23, the CEEB or SAT scores and the immunization test results do not need to be submitted.

Students applying to the Universidad del Turabo do not need to submit a Certificate of Immunization if they are over the age of 21 and the CEEB scores are not required to be submitted if they are 25 and above. Some of the different programs have additional requirements and information regarding these requirements can be found at the university’s official website.

Transfer students must submit two official transcripts from all previously attended institutions, a recommendation from the Dean at their previous institution, a small nonrefundable Admissions Fee, and possibly the catalogs of all previously attended institutions. International students must also submit a copy of their Student Visa or Residence (Green) Card.

Students applying to a graduate program at UMET must have received a Bachelor’s degree and submit their credit transcript from the institution the degree was earned at. These students must also submit a nonrefundable Admissions Fee and have a Departmental Interview. Students who wish to enroll in the Business Administration and Environmental Affairs Schools must also submit three letters of recommendation. There are also minimum GPA requirements depending on the program the student wishes to enroll in. Information regarding these minimum requirements can be found at the UMET official website

Financial Aid

Some of the special scholarships offered at the Universidad del Este include: the Hispanic College Fund, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, the HACU, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), the National Institute of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program, and the Beca Desarrollo Juvenil Municipio de San Juan.

The scholarships offered at the Universidad del Turabo include: PRIDCO Scholarship, Athletic Scholarship, Ana G. Mendez Scholarship, Choral Scholarship, Honor Program, Permanent Scholarship Fund, and LEAP Scholarship.

There are also various scholarship and grant opportunities at the University Metropolitan, which include: Athletic Scholarship, Ana G. Mendez Scholarship, Nursing Grant, Chancellor Grant, Administrative Grant, Honor Program, Permanent Scholarship Fund, and CES Grant.

Students may also take out loans to help fund their education. However this type of financial aid must be paid back with interest. The loan opportunities available include: the Federal Family Education Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, the Federal Family for Parent Loan, the Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Loans, the Direct Federal Parent PLUS Loan, and various private loans. Students may also participate in the Federal Work-Study Program (CWS) or the Federal Work-Study Program in Community Service (CWSCS) by working a part-time job in order to help pay for the expenses of their higher education.

Athletics

The Extramural Program is part of the Inter-University Athletic League (IAL). The various sports teams offered include: basketball, beach volleyball, volleyball, table tennis, tennis, weight lifting, chess, track and field, cross country, softball, and relay. Student athletes also have the opportunity to receive scholarships, which include tuition, books and supplies, and room and board. There are also intramural sports offered for all students.
