Mech-Tech College

Introduction

Mech-Tech College (MTC) was licensed in 1984 in the City of Caguas, Puerto Rico, as a technical education institute. It began with three courses of study, with students taking classes in electro-mechanics, automotive mechanics, and automatic transmissions. Today, the College offers 20 academic courses that prepare students for technical, skilled automotive work in a number of different areas.

The campus has expanded as well. MTC now offers classes in Caguas, its birthplace; Mayaguez; and Bayamon. It has received program approvals from the ACCET for its Marine Mechanics and Industrial Welding programs, as well as its Automotive Mechanics and Systems Integration – Networks programs.

MTC was certified to award associate degrees in 2002, and now offers three different associate degree programs.

Academics

MTC is dedicated to providing its students with quality post-secondary education in technical fields. It gives students the opportunity to prepare for a career with hands-on courses and qualified faculty technicians.

Students can choose from 20 courses of study in the areas of mechanics, metals, electronics, electricity, and refrigeration. There are three campuses, and each campus has its own specialties. Students should consider their specific path of study when choosing a location.

Though most courses at MTC are not degree courses or certification programs, students do earn a diploma that states their competency and will help them get a job in their chosen career path.

Associate Degree Programs

MTC offers three associate degree programs in the areas of Automotive Mechanics Technology, Electrical Technology, and Tool & Die Maker Technology. Degree-seeking students graduate with a diploma and a degree that will help them move forward in their careers as mechanics.

The associate degree programs incorporate decision-making skills, business skills, leadership techniques, and self-employment education into the technical foundation. These additional elements prepare students to open their own workshops and to take relevant exams offered by the State Examining Board of Puerto Rico.

Unique Programs

Mech-Tech College Racing is a high-speed competitive event hosted for the education and enjoyment of students and the community. The MTC Race Track is located in Ponce, and hosts racing events throughout the year. The MTC racing team competes with other racing teams in electrically-charged sporting events that have the full support of the MTC campus and its students.

Students can participate in this event by joining the MTC team and working on the race car. This is an integrated exercise that is fun and competitive, but also pushes students to practice what they’ve learned in classes and put it to real use. On the big day, food, drink, activities and games create a festive atmosphere that celebrates the students’ accomplishments and charges the audience for the race.

The MTC Race is also a televised event – you can watch shows online at www.mtcpr.tv, where episodes talk about the track, show how the cars are built, and put you right in the action of the race.

Admissions

A higher education at MTC is open to anyone who shows a genuine interest in continuing studies and dedicating themselves to academic goals and a career. Potential students can apply online through the MTC website.

Associate Degree Programs

Associate degree programs at MTC have higher admissions standards, as students must demonstrate an ability to take on the level of work required for a degree program. In addition to the requirements listed above, applicants must have a high school diploma or the equivalent with at least a 2.0 GPA. They should also take the CEEB’s College Studies Admission Test.

Financial Aid

MTC offers all of the financial aid benefits that students can qualify for from the federal government. If you are seeking financial aid, begin by filling out the FAFSA, which is available for free online at www.fafsa.gov. This form determines your eligibility for the many federal aid programs, including grants, loans, and work-study programs. It is also a required component of applications to many third-party aid programs and scholarship competitions.

Need-Based Awards

The Federal Pell Grant is awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to undergraduates who demonstrate financial need. Pell Grant awards do not need to be repaid. Other government-sponsored grants include the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant and the Supplementary Educational Aid Program, which also each provide money that does not need to be repaid.

Other Awards

The First Year Student Scholarship Program awards money on the basis of both financial need and academic excellence. Students who earned at least a 3.0 high school GPA and are enrolling in full-time study are eligible for this award

MTC also offers Institutional Grants to specific groups of people, including College employees, children of College employees, and children of mechanics who are about to retire.
