The University of Rio Grande (URG) offers a wide array of courses stressing the importance of critical thinking in order to prepare students for life after college. With over 60 academic programs and associates, bachelors, and masters programs, the University strives to strike the perfect balance between liberal arts theory and state university practicality. Accredited by the Higher Learning Committee, The University of Rio Grande boasts two specialty colleges for their most popular academic pursuits. The College of Professional Studies specializes in business, education, fine arts and technology, with master’s programs in business administration and classroom teaching, where the College of Liberal Arts offers programs in nursing, science, humanities and social science.

Admissions

The University of Rio Grande evaluates applications for undergraduates, transfer students, professional study and graduate students.

Undergrads need only submit their application, high school diploma or GED equivalency diploma and ACT results. Application fees are waived if submitted online. International students seeking to attend URG must also submit a certification of finances as well as TOEFL scores, or schedule a TOEFL examination.

URG values a strong academic record as well as involvement in community-oriented extracurricular activities.

Financial Aid

Almost all undergraduate students attending the University of Rio Grande receive some form of financial aid, many in the form of federal grants and loans.

The school’s FAFSA filing deadline is March 15th preceding the year of study, though students who submit their applications early may be eligible to receive additional funding.

Students must be accepted to Rio Grande before being eligible to be evaluated for financial aid. Financial aid for returning students is evaluated based on course completion rate as well as cumulative GPA. URG, in conjunction with Sallie Mae, also offers an installment payment plan.

Students

The University of Rio Grande’s campus extends over 190 acres in beautiful Southeastern Ohio, offering students the natural beauty of rolling verdant hills and the safety of a small town community. Campus organization sponsored events in the past have included skiing and hiking trips, concerts, comedians, dances, fundraisers, out-door carnivals, and NHL and NFL games.

In addition to campus organizations URG also sponsors nine social fraternities and sororities. Membership is by invitation, and students must complete 12 credit hours and have a minimum GPA of 2.00 to be eligible to pledge an organization.

The University of Rio Grande also boasts the recent addition of a Circle K chapter, an organization dedicated to nourishing future leaders through service and friendship.

Athletics

The University of Rio Grande offers eleven sports, six for women and five for men, including baseball, basketball, cross country, softball, track and field, volleyball and soccer. URG also offers cheerleading and dance teams.

The University of Rio Grande is home to college basketball legend Clarence “Bevo” Francis, who in the 1952-53 season led his team to an incredible 39-0 season, a record that remains unbroken.

URG participates in the American Mideast Conference and their mascot is the Redstorm.
