Northland Community and Technical College

Introduction

Northland Community and Technical College came into existence in 1949 when the Minnesota State Board of Education permitted an area vocational school for Thief River Falls. After a few name changes and mergers, the school finally became Northland Community and Technical College. This two year community college is committed to building a quality learning environment for students through partnerships with businesses, communities, and other educational institutions. Apart from the Thief River Falls Campus and East Grand Forks Campus, the institute also operates satellite campuses in Roseau and TRF Airport.

Northland Community and Technical College is fully accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. The institute also holds several discipline based accreditations from agencies such as Minnesota Department of Administration Building Codes and Standards Division; Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); Minnesota Board of Nursing; Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE); American Society of Heath Systems Pharmacists; and Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.

Northland College offers liberal arts programs in diverse areas of study such as English, journalism, biology, medicine, history, education, criminal justice, business, mathematics, music, and political science. The transfer programs prepare the students for the transfer to a four year institute. The College offers nationally-renowned technical programs designed for students wanting to quickly join the work force.

Admissions

Each year, Northland College boasts an enrollment of more than 5,000 students. Students seeking admission to the College must send the completed application form along with their official transcripts and ACT / SAT scores. Getting a transfer to the institute is fairly easy and can be done in just a few simple steps. Just send across the application form along with the official transcripts from all previously attended institutes. Northland College welcomes international students from across the world. Applicants who come from non-English speaking countries must provide a proof of their proficiency in the language by taking any of the following tests: TOEFL (Test of English Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

Northland College offers an active and vibrant student life. The campus is brimming with extracurricular activities and events to provide students the chance to participate, meet fellow learners, and develop lifelong relationships. The campus life forms an integral part of the educational experience. There are diverse clubs and organizations to get involved in at the Northland College. The student organizations have a range of goals, including athletic, social, academic, and awareness spreading. Northland College strongly supports student participation in the professional service organizations and honor societies.

The college also has a Phi Theta Kappa group that aims to recognize and promote scholarship among the two-year college students. In order to realize this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa provides the opportunity for the development of leadership and service in a highly intellectual climate. This encourages the exchange of ideas for inspiration of interest in continuing academic excellence.

Media and Publications:

KSRQ Pioneer 90.1 FM is the student-operated radio station of Northland College. It is affiliated with Independent Public Radio (AMPERS).

Campus Facilities:

The campus library mission provides the information resources to support and supplement the various academic programs and curriculum of Northland College. It teaches students the skills to easily access the materials, evaluate the critical information, and utilize the information obtained to their best advantage. The library embraces all the advanced technological systems to ensure that you enjoy all the facilities of the changing times.

Students can take advantage of the Kuder Career Planning System to explore their lifelong career plans. This is an online career exploration program that analyzes the interests and self reported skills of the students and compares them with actual professionals. This assists the students in identifying the skills required and the features that are most important for their desirable profession or job. The program can be used for free, and is accessible anytime via Internet.

Northland College’s disabilities services ensure that the institute remains accessible, and barrier-free. It takes due care to ensure that the students with documented disabilities are provided the same opportunities to enjoy the campus facilities. It is committed to provide equal access to the academic programs and courses. There are modified bathroom conveniences and parking spaces especially available for the students with documented physical limitations. The Thief River Falls campus also offers decent dining options for the student, staff and faculty. Athletics

The Northland College athletic department sponsors men’s and women’s teams in diverse varsity sports such as basketball, baseball, football, volleyball, and softball. The athletic teams are nicknamed the Pioneers. The College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III and Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC).

Additional School Information

Northland Community and Technical College also features a custom-made training and continuing education division to serve the educational and professional growth needs of organizations and individuals. They served more than 160 companies and 4610 individuals in 2009. They have an experienced staff committed to serve the region with numerous specialties in the areas such as healthcare, business, entrepreneurship, fire training, manufacturing and leadership.
