Introduction

Rend Lake College, also referred to as RLC, is a public two-year community college located in Ina, Illinois. It is one of the two-year, open-admission colleges that make up the Illinois Community College System (ICCS), organized under the Illinois Public Community College Act. The college was originally founded in 1955 as Mt. Vernon Community College to provide post-secondary education to the high school students. The institute was officially renamed Rend Lake College on December 20, 1966. Apart from the main campus in Ina, RLC also operates a second learning center known as the RLC Murphy-Wall Pinckneyville Campus in Pinckneyville, Illinois. RLC also has two satellite campuses at the local correctional facilities under contract with the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Academics

Rend Lake College is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) to grant certificates, diplomas and associate degrees to the students. The College also partners with regional four-year colleges and universities, such as Southern Illinous University, Carbondale, Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, and the Western Illinois to offer statewide transfer agreement. The academic counseling center at Rend Lake College offers facilities such as career development & goal setting, educational planning, assessment testing, class scheduling, and campus services information.

Rend Lake College offers more than 40 associate degree programs, and over 75 certificate programs in diverse areas of study such as agriculture business, chemistry, biology, computers, history, automotive, political science, wielding, viticulture, and pharmacy. RLC comprises of seven primary divisions: Advanced Technology; Math/Science/Education; Allied Health, Health & P.E.; Applied Science; Skills Center; Liberal Arts; and Special Programs.

RLC Online:

Rend Lake College also offers online education to students who are unable to attend regular college due to several reasons. Such students can opt for the online degrees and certificates offered by RLC. Depending on their structure, the courses may be composed of sessions using Blackboard, a course management system. Rend Lake College is a proud member of the Illinois Virtual Campus Student Support Center. As an SSC, RLC provides the following services: student advising, access to library, technical assistance, access to computers, proctoring tests and exams, and information regarding online learning.

Admissions

Each session, RLC enrolls more than 5000 students in its full-time and part-time programs. Students seeking admission in Rend Lake College must take the COMPASS/ ASSET test if they plan to take an English class, a math class, or a class with a reading requirement. Each student registering for 12 or more credit hours or who has accrued 12 credit hours must take the assessment test before registration. Students must also take the ACT or SAT test and send the scores to RLC with the completed application form. Applicants for a certificate or an associate’s degree from RLC must submit official transcripts from institutes they have attended.

Prospective international students (whose native language is not English) must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). However, a TOEFL test waiver may be obtained for students from countries where English is the principal mode of education.

Financial Aid

Rend Lake College offers several types of financial aid to needy and deserving students. The assistance is provided in the form of scholarships, grants, tuition waivers, loans and student employments. RLC students who qualify for financial assistance may reschedule the payment of tuition, fees, books, and supplies up to the sum of aid they receive. All students applying for financial aid must complete the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Grants include Federal Pell Grant, FSEOG Grant, ISAC Monetary Award Program, and Silas Purnell Illinois Incentive for Access (IIA) Grant. Rend Lake College also participates in the Federal Direct Loan program. These Federal Direct Loans are available in two forms: Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans. Loans are the form of financial aid that needs to be returned by the students.

Students at Rend Lake College may also apply for the various scholarships that include Evelyn Patton Fuller Memorial Scholarship, Continental Tire North America Inc. Scholarship, AMVETS Sad Sacks Scholarship, Doug Leeck Memorial Scholarship, National Defense Transportation Assn. Students

Rend Lake College boasts an active student body with more than 25 registered student clubs in diverse fields such as academic, competitive, and cultural based activities. Students can either join an existing club or create a new one. Some of the on-campus student clubs and organizations are Agri Achievers, Art League, Athletics, Automotive Club, Cheerleading, College Bowl, Computer Club, Creative Writing Club, Culinary Arts Club, Horticulture Club, International Studies, Intramural Sports, Laker Girls, Practical Nursing Club, Skills USA, National Society of Leadership and Success, Student Ambassadors, Thespians Club, and Wireless Amateur Radio Club.

The RLC College Bowl is an academic club that competes with other schools in the Southern Illinois Collegiate Common Market (SICCM) conference. The RLC Cultural Events Committee gathers artists in multiple disciplines from both the college and surrounding area. The main campus houses an active theater, which hosts many student-organized productions throughout the academic year. The Thespians, a student-led improvisational group is an extension of the theater department. The members usually perform at local area cultural events. RLC also features an inter-college organization known as the Student Ambassadors.

Rend Lake College also has a Greek presence in the form of a charter for a local chapter (Rho Xi) of Phi Theta Kappa, the national community college educational honor fraternity. This is the community college equivalent of the Phi Beta Kappa.

Media and Publications:

RLC Times is a newspaper run by students with an interest in journalism. The students get an opportunity to gain experience by working for the award-winning student newspaper. It is published ten times a year. Students who qualify to work on the newspaper get several tuition-waiver opportunities from the Journalism instructor and RLC Times sponsor.

Campus Facilities:

The RLC Learning Resource Center is home to the college library which includes over 21,000 volumes and 145 periodical and newspaper titles, alongside online resources and a media learning area. The center also features facilities for research, study, leisure reading, class preparation, and wireless Internet access.

The Center for Business Services is committed to meeting the training/ re-training requirements of business and industry. The center provides residents of the college district with the specific training needed to upgrade and enhance skills or take full-time employment in diverse sectors. A wide variety of courses, workshops, and other training opportunities are also available at the center.

The Aquatics Center is a modern facility featuring a lap pool, a six-lane, a whirlpool and a hydro therapy pool. The lap pool also features a ramp for the physically challenged individuals. Both the pools are well-equipped with stairs and a hydraulic chair lift to support patrons into the water. Other facilities include shower and locker room, a changing room for elderly and physically challenged individuals, and a common lobby entrance.

The Student Center includes offices for the Cooperative Education and Employment Services, Marketing/ Public Information, Workforce Investment Act, Truck Driver Training, AmeriCorps Security and Subway. The Children’s Center provides practical laboratory experience for students in the Early Childhood Education program and child care for toddlers, infants, and preschoolers of faculty, students, staff and other district residents.

Rend Lake College offers on-site housing facilities in apartments located on the south side of campus. The apartments feature modern amenities and facilities for the convenience and comfort of the students. The apartments are decently furnished with two bedrooms and two baths. Four students are assigned per apartment with on-site laundry service. The housing rent and fees include the water, electric, cable TV and garbage pickup.

Athletics

Rend Lake College’s athletic department sponsors more than 15 varsity sports teams that compete in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference and NCJAA Division II. The sports teams are nicknamed as the Warriors. Men’s sports teams participate in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, track & field, and wrestling. Women’s teams take part in basketball, cross-country, golf, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball. RLC also has a cheerleading squad and a dance team. RLC promotes intramural sports for recreation of the students, faculty members, and staff. The James (Hummer) Waugh Gymnasium houses the Wayne Arnold Aerobic Super-Circuit Fitness Center, coach offices and locker rooms for both Warrior and Lady Warrior athletic teams.

The Hitting Zone at Rend Lake College is a training facility committed to the development of baseball/softball skills and physical health of Southern Illinois athletes. The center operates under the sponsorship of Rend Lake College and provides professional training from members of the Warrior baseball staff. It serves as both an indoor training complex for Warrior and Lady Warrior intercollegiate athletic teams .The various features of the Hitting Zone include:

  • Two pitching mounds
  • Observation deck for parents and visitors
  • Accessibility to the aquatics center and aerobics fitness center

Traditions

Rend Lake College has been following the tradition of hosting the Homecoming to kickoff events to celebrate the Big Read. The Fun Fests also form an important part of RLC traditions.
