Introduction

Founded in 1946 as Moline Community College, Black Hawk College (BHC) received its current name in 1961. With campuses in both Moline and in Galva, Illinois, the school promotes an appreciation and understanding of the diversity within the human family. The campus provides a setting that nurtures educational, personal, and professional development of the students.

Academics

The academic programs offer more than 150 arts and sciences options, over 70 career training programs, over 40 traditional liberal arts courses leading to degrees and certificates. The college also offers a range of special purpose and community service (outreach) programs, such as occupational and adult education courses.

Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) Center provides several classes, workshops and programs ranging from professional development, short-term training, and workforce skills to community education classes such as leisure and hobby, self-help classes, youth camps and classes.

Admissions

Admissions are non-competitive. Freshman students seeking admission must send the completed application form along with their official high school transcripts or GED scores. Students must also take the ACT / SAT.The COMPASS placement testing helps students start on the right step by assessing which courses are a best match for them.

Financial Aid

The financial aid office assists students and their family to apply for federal, state and institutional funds to enable them to meet their educational costs. All students interested in receiving financial aid must complete the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The institute offers financial assistance through the following financial aid programs: grants, scholarships, loans, and federal work-study programs.

Grants and scholarships are gifts that do not require any repayment. Some of the different types of grant and scholarships are Federal Gates Millennium Undergraduate Scholars Program, American Atheists College Scholarship, Teri and Art Iwasaki Scholarship, Harold W. Rosenthal Fellowship, American Nuclear Society Scholarship, Bachelor’s Scholarships, Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG), and Illinois Monetary Award (MAP).

Loans are the type of financial aid that must be repaid. The financial aid office also offers federal work-study programs through which students can take up part-time jobs to pay for college. Veteran benefits are offered to veterans and their family members. Veterans and their families must discuss with the Veterans and Military Personnel Student Services representative in financial aid regarding possible educational benefits. The benefits are available through the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Students

Each year, Black Hawk College enrolls more than 8,300 college credit students; 3,000 adult basic education students; and 6,000 continuing education / vocational training students. The campus boasts a vibrant and active student life. The Student Government Association organizes events and activities to enrich the experience of the students. There are several on-campus clubs and organizations based on diverse interests.

Some of the popular student clubs and organizations are African Student Association (ASA), Association of Latin-American Students (ALAS), Child Development Club, Disability Student Organization (DSO), Military Students and Veterans Club, Phi Theta Kappa, Social Gaming Club, BHC Theatre Club, and Native American Club.

Students can also participate in the various annual events and activities including the Welcome Back Event: Get Hypnotized; Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration; Jason Levasseur: Get Your Show on the Road; Fall Festival; Karaoke Celebration; Veteran’s Day Celebration; and Thanksgiving Celebration.

Campus Facilities:

Residence Life offers affordable and high-quality supervised apartment living for its students. The fully furnished apartments on the campus provide students with safe, clean, and comfortable housing within walking distance of classrooms. The apartments are air-conditioned with satellite TV and wireless internet service. The units are well-equipped with modern amenities such as a full kitchen complete with sink, stove, and refrigerator; a completely furnished living room; and a modern bathroom with shower and closets.

The Counseling Center offers personal and professional counseling to the students in diverse issues. The counselors assist students in exploring alternatives, weighing the consequences and learning new skills to help them deal with and resolve the problems they are facing.

The Disabilities Office assists students with documented disabilities receive equal opportunities in the institute. They offer a variety of accommodation services intended to reduce the effects that a disability may have on the performance of the student in a traditional classroom or online setting.

The Student Success Center provides free tutoring, free workshops and a variety of student support services (TRiO SSS). Some of the additional services include learning styles, study groups, instruction and coaching, and support with successful learning practices such as study skills, time management, note taking, and test taking.

Athletics

The athletic department sponsors men’s and women’s teams in diverse sports such as basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, and golf. The athletic teams compete in the intercollegiate sports as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Arrowhead Conference, and Illinois N4C Conference. The sports teams are nicknamed the Warriors. The colors are black and gold.

The college has won several recognitions and awards such as Nancy Solbrig Garners Top Award; Student Commitment to Excellence Award; and the Outstanding Local High School Grads Award.

Accreditation

BHC is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Institution of Higher Learning Commission. The college also holds other discipline-based accreditations from agencies such as the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. BHC is also recognized and certified by the Illinois Community College Board.
