Academics

In July 1966, Scott Community College became a recognized entity, the exact year that Iowa’s General Assembly legislation created 15 community college districts for the state and one of the 15 being the Eastern Iowa Community College District.

History

Scott Community College’s ancestry is traced back to the past Davenport Area Technical School, which happened to be a technical & vocational institution that offered a 2 year liberal arts courses and was ran by the Davenport School District and the Palmer Junior College.

Scott Community College had its very first term in the fall of 1966. As time passed, many more courses were being added to the list of the school’s offerings, which included; drafting, secretarial & clerical, and auto body & repair.

In 1969, the SCC’s current campus opened in Belmont Road in Riverdale. Although SCC has a Bettendorf’s mailing address, the college is sort of located in Riverdale. The College was built on the land that was formerly the property of Alcoa. Initially, the school grounds housed just technology courses, and was further developed to offer liberal arts and trade courses. In 1987, the Scott Community College campus was expanded and in the mid 1990’s, it was expanded again.

Other Locations

In addition to SCC’s main campus, there are a couple of other locations included as well. Located just near the Interstate 80 in Davenport are The Blong Technology Center and Midwest Center for Safety & Recue Training. Located in downtown Davenport is the Career Assistance Center and The Khal Educational Center.

Courses Offered

Scott Community College offers you the opportunity to choose from over 5 quality career programs some of which include Computer Science, Foreign Language & Literature, Marketing etc. With a lot of options to choose from, you are sure to find a program that will match your interest and natural talent.

Distance Learning Courses

If you are interested in earning your degree from the comfort of your home, you will be glad to know that SCC also offers an array of online courses as well – but this is done in collaboration with the Iowa Community College Online Consortium.

Senior Citizen Program

Scott Community College offers a variety of Continuing Education classes, specially designed for older students and senior citizens. The classes they offer will certainly meet up to the older student’s expectations. The classes include; gardening, physical fitness, trips and tours etc.

Accreditation

Any school that is not accredited should be avoided like the plague. Scott Community College is accredited by the HLC (Higher Learning Commission). Accreditation by the HLC simply means that SCC’s programs meet or even exceed the standard for academia set for all private and public institutions of higher learning within a nineteen (19) state district. Scott Community College is approved by Iowa’s Department of Education and also by the Board of Regents.

Admissions

Applying for admission at Scott Community College is quite easy. Here’s all you need to do:

  • You can submit an application for admission on the school’s website or simply download a printable one. After filling out the downloaded application, you can mail it or drop it off at the SCC registrar’s office. The best part is that you do not have to pay an application fee
  • If at present, you are attending or have attended another institution, you will need to send certified transcripts to the office of the SCC registrar. The registrar will assess your transcript and will tell you just how many of your credits will be accepted
  • Are you absolutely new to college? Do not sweat it. Submitting your ACT scores is one way of getting in, or you can stop at SCC in order to sit for a COMPASS test – that is, if you have not taken this test in the past 5 years. Scott Community College is an Open Admission Institution. The test score is only used just to determine the ideal classes for you to take – this way, you will be able to get off to a great start in your freshman year
  • Financial Aid

    The basic purpose of financial aid is to offer assistance to students who otherwise would otherwise find it quite difficult or totally impossible to attend school. In order to get full consideration for all kinds of financial assistance, your files for student financial aid MUST be completed within a specific time frame. You must reapply for financial aid every academic year.

    If you demonstrate the biggest financial need, you stand the chance to be awarded with any of the following grants:

  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant(FSEOG)
  • EICCD
  • The Iowa Grant
  • Federal Pell Grant
  • The Iowa Vocational/Technical Tuition Grant Program
  • College Work Study Program

    In order to be eligible for the Federal College Work Study Program, you will need to demonstrate financial need. If you meet the requirements for the work study program, you may be able to earn your work study via the “America Reads/America Counts” program. This program entails college students tutoring elementary aged pupils one-on-one in mathematics and/or reading. If you are chosen for the America Reads/America Counts program, you will receive formal training and you must also complete background screening too.

    Federal Loans

    There are 3 various types of federal loan programs that are available to you. These federal loan programs include; Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, Subsidized Stafford Loans & Federal Parent Loans.

    Scholarships

    College Foundation Scholarships – Scott Community College provides funding for numerous scholarship opportunities. The scholarships are not based entirely on academic merit. As a matter of fact, a lot of the scholarships are simply based on special talent, financial need or geographic location. For a scholarship application, you should contact the Foundation Office or the Financial Aid Office.

    Outside Scholarships – These scholarships are funded through local and civic organizations. You will need to contact the local community organizations in order to get more information on eligibility criteria and scholarship opportunities.

    Who is Not Eligible for Financial Aid?

    You will not be eligible for financial aid if you are a student who has enrolled for short-term programs.

    You may also have reduced eligibility for financial aid if you are enrolled in SCC’s distance learning education courses.

    If you attend another college at the same time that you are attending Scott Community College, this may reduce your financial aid eligibility.

    Please know that financial aid is only made available for qualified degree seeking students who are enrolled in credit classes. Do not expect to receive financial aid for the following:

  • Test outs
  • Life experiences
  • Audits
  • Continuing education classes
  • Community education classes
  • Students

    You will be glad to know that Scott Community College offers an array of opportunities for its students who wish to participate in exciting students’ activities. Participating in these activities will help round out your learning and also give you a break from your studies and an opportunity to make new friends. College life goes way beyond the classroom; it also includes getting involved in student activities as well.

    There are more than fifteen (15) students’ activities that you can get involved with at Scott Community College such as Interior Design Club, Student Government Association, International Club, etc.

    Athletics

    Scott Community College is a member of the prestigious NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) and the Iowa Junior College Athletic Association. The Director of Athletics governs SCC’s athletics and the Iowa State Association for Community College Athletics sets the rules.

    The name of the school’s soccer team is “The Eagles”.

    Intramural Sports

    Scott Community College offers you an array of intramural sports in which you can participate. Regardless of your gender, you can enter the competition in the SCC’s intramural program all through the academic year. Even if you participate in the intercollegiate sports, you may also participate in the intramural program during your off season and in other activities aside from your competitive sport.

    Additional School Information

    Scott Community College hosts a variety of cultural and other unique events all through the year. Quite a number of the events hosted by SCC have become standard features, which take place every year.
